When the first World War broke out, Chanel was found behind enemy lines. She was involved with a German military officer by the name of Hans Gunther von Dincklage. Dincklage helped with her perfume business but later caused her trouble after the war. Chanel was interrogated but found innocent from collaborating with the Nazis in any other way. Some have wondered whether or not her close friend Winston Churchill had helped her behind the scenes. Even though Chanel was not charged, society wasn't very happy with her. They thought that having any relationship with a German was a betrayal of her country. In result of this, she flew to Switzerland where she lived in exile for many years.
